Who is our customer

Merensky Timber (Pty) Ltd is the forestry arm of Hans Merensky Holdings and is one of the leading integrated plantation and processing company groups in South Africa. Merensky plantations comprise both pine and eucalyptus species, totalling ca. 65,000 hectares across South Africa, as well as 3 sawmills. The Group has ca. 2,600 employees and is well-entrenched in the forestry market, tracing its roots in the country back for over 90 years.

What is our funding objective?

The purpose of this FMO grant is to execute a historic research and analysis into community displacement and losses, in the context of the South Africa land restitution program, and to further boost the capacity of the customer with reference to the stakeholder engagement and community development approaches.

Why do we fund this investment?

This research will support the overview of displacement and losses suffered by local communities and inform possibilities for Merensky to further tailor (if and where relevant) the community support projects. Due to the apparent interfaces, the stakeholder engagement approach and the community development plans are included in the Terms of Reference for this research. We believe that this project has the potential to become an impactful endeavor for the sector and region. FMO TA is well-positioned to support this value-add initiative that enhances Merensky's capacity to establish meaningful relationships with affected communities, whereby historic losses are adequately and explicitly addressed.
