Electricity systems are undergoing a radical transformation, according to the World Economic Forum, which identifies trends including increasing reliance on electricity by more large-scale economic sectors, decentralisation stemming from a cost decrease for distributed resources such as power generation and storage, and the digitalisation of the grid.

Managing this transformation effectively will be critical to meeting carbon reduction goals, as well as leading to new business opportunities and increasing use of power from renewable resources, while blurring traditional boundaries between producers, distributors, and consumers.
