Financial inclusion has an important role in fostering sustainable economic growth and development. The Peruvian government has consistently promoted financial inclusion. For several consecutive years, Peru has been identified by the Economist Intelligence Unit as the world’s most conducive environment for financial inclusion.
Positive impact on poverty alleviation is reported from Peru: the percentage of people living below the poverty line has dropped dramatically in the last decade from 45% to 26%, whilst extreme poverty has gone from 14% to 5% in the same period. Real income in rural areas has also increased by 60% since 2004, whereas in urban areas it went up by only 20%.
To what extent can these positive results be attributed to (commercial) financial institutions? And, what more is needed from financial institutions or alternative financial service providers to close the gap between the rich and poor? What role do governments play in the enhancement of financial inclusion?
By analysing the Peruvian experience and with the assistance of a panel of experts, this event will identify good practices and focus on the challenges ahead.
