Driven by social media campaigns such as #metoo and #timesup, last year saw progress by women's movements around the world toward increased visibility and influence in both political and economic systems. The latest annual report from UN Women highlights systematic improvements stemming from women's activism as well as the significant challenges that remain. The organisation's executive director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka calls for an end to all forms of gender inequality and culture of gender-based poverty, abuse and exploitation, as well as a movement of young men and boys who value and respect women and girls, changing the way men listen to women and the way they look at them.
