Last year was a record for new developments and investment in renewable energy around the world, according to the Renewables 2018 Global Status Report from the REN21 renewable energy policy stakeholder network. It says power capacity is increasing as the cost of materials continues to decline, and many countries are drawing up policies to boost support for research and construction of generating facilities, with China, Europe and the US accounting for 75% of global investment in renewables.
However, global progress remains uneven and the heating, cooling and transportation sectors are still lagging behind other industries. The authors say more effort and investment are needed to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 to guarantee affordable, sustainable and reliable energy for all.
