October 22, 2018

Up to half of all fish caught in tropical countries like Indonesia, is lost due to lack of preservation techniques. But ice offers a means for hundreds of thousands of small-scale coastal fishermen to preserve their catches. This is why FMO invests in the Meloy fund, reports P+ Special Magazine.

Promoting small-scale fishery and nature conservation can go hand in hand. Nature conservation organisation Rare (based in the US) has been working with local communities in over fifty countries for decades. The organisation mainly focuses on behavioural change in local communities, to bring development and nature conservation into focus. The global Fish Forever program was launched to help local fishermen and their families.

For FMO, investing in the Meloy fund is a test case. FMO finances the investment with our MASSIF Fund, which is managed on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. FMO investment officer Maurice Scheepens: “We participate to gain experience. After all, there are hardly any investors who focus on small-scale fishing, in combination with nature conservation.”
