Supply chains offer starting point to ensure decent work standards

January 18, 2018

The UN's corporate sustainability initiative, United Nations Global Compact, estimates that 780 million people are not earning enough money to lift themselves out of poverty, and more than 150 million are child labour victims. With an estimated 80% of global trade passing through supply chains, they serve as a starting point for meeting goals on decent work standards set by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. According to international companies surveyed for the report Decent Work in Global Supply Chains, major internal obstacles to achieving decent and sustainable work standards include lack of data, resources, and technology, while external hurdles include weak institutions, inconsistent labour legislation, crime and corruption, and a lack of leverage with suppliers.
