None of the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals can be met without addressing gender discrimination that holds back sustainable development, according to UN Women. Women and girls are over-represented amongst the world's poorest people, face greater education gaps, and are 14 times as likely to die in climate-related catastrophes than men, the organisation says. In its flagship report Turning Promises Into Action, UN Women identifies integrated approaches to policy-making that can tackle discrimination, as well as sustainable development issues, and calls for improved data collection, greater priority for gender-responsive investment and the strengthening of accountability.
