Water-related risks can affect human well-being, exacerbate geopolitical conflict, and contribute to food insecurity, and while these factors have always threatened societies, they are now all the more serious because of their global scale, especially as a result of climate change, according to Water, Security and Conflict, a report by the World Resources Institute. The authors, which identify three categories of security risk - diminished water supplies, increased demand, and extreme flood events - also note that the degree of water risk is also a function of a community’s governance capacity and resilience in the face of natural hazards.
