Alexandra Freitas, Senior Environmental & Social Officer

"Since FMO is a leader in ESG initiatives, it's an honor to participate in projects where your impact can be felt."

Can you tell us a bit about your career history?

Throughout my career, I've worked with a diverse range of employers, including government agencies, consultancies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and development banks. This has afforded me a wealth of viewpoints about ESG. I understand the origins of all parties engaged in a venture. This is a significant benefit for cooperation and achieving success in executing investments. My previous position focused on policy matters, and it was a highly valuable and beneficial chapter in my career. Given that I'm someone who prefers direct involvement and enjoys fieldwork, I opted to return to FMO. With FMO being a leader in ESG initiatives, it's an honor to participate in projects where your impact can be felt.

Given that I'm someone who prefers more direct involvement with customers and enjoys fieldwork, I opted to return to FMO.

What motivates me are the situations in the regions we work in. The dedication you show is evident in the project's outcomes, and frequently impacts us on a personal scale. It's clear to see who we're striving to make a positive difference for.

What makes FMO different from other organizations that recruit ESG professionals?

The effort we put in all our ESG projects is measurable. Everyone within FMO recognizes the significance of ESG. The ESG+ mindset is therefore very positive and non-debatable. I also think the presence of numerous younger employees at FMO contributes to this. No one argues about the value of ESG, it's just a given.

At FMO, our employee base is incredibly varied. We boast diversity across age groups, genders, and cultural backgrounds. For me, this adds another positive aspect to being part of this organization.

Beginning in 2023, we established an ESG+ division. It's truly a boon. We exchange abundant information and engage with everyone in the organization to bolster our ESG objectives.

What's your daily work look like?

In my day-to-day work I engage extensively with colleagues from the deal team, as well as those in KYC, Legal and Compliance, among others. We really have a tightly interwoven ESG network within FMO and connect with the ESG circles in DFI's. This community fosters an appealing environment for working and mutual learning. Having such a wealth of experts nearby can't be taken for granted!

For me, working as a professional in the ESG domain means engaging in project-based work, which I genuinely enjoy. Although the investment guidelines remain consistent and clear, each venture is unique due to the varying factors encountered during the execution of the investment.

Can you tell us something fun about you?

A personal fun fact? Well, I love dogs! I volunteer as a dogsitter for colleagues, neighbours and family. It is wonderful to walk with the dogs and take care of them.
