Clayton Babel, Senior System Engineer

"The mission that FMO stands for appeals to me--it did 10 years ago and still does today."

What brought you to FMO?

I made the switch to FMO over 10 years ago, and even though I didn’t know them as an employer at the time, it didn’t stop me! The mission that FMO stands for appeals to me, then and still today. Combined with the innovations in the field of ICT, the possibilities that this entails and all the training facilities—I had enough reasons me to switch. And I haven't regretted it.

Since my start here I have been involved in many different projects, from setting up an ICT policy plan to implementing the Swift platform to replacing 700 laptops in two weeks. For the latter project I was the technical project lead, and it was great experience because the project covered the whole organization. I think that appeals not only to your technical knowledge, but also to your flexibility and skills to communicate convincingly and smoothly.

 A futureproof engineer

FMO is truly an international organization. You don't think about it every day. It's a matter of fact: it's buzzing here. You hear a lot of languages around you all the time, but English is our lingua franca

For me personally, 10 years of FMO also means professional growth. You get the space to pick things up, make mistakes and fix them. And the latter helps you grow and often provides an extra improvement in the result. The trust you get here has really strengthened me.

For example, I like to make use of the training opportunities at FMO. You get to learn a lot about the latest ICT technology and train soft skills on the job and with courses. You grow professionally and develop yourself as the system engineer of the future. My starting point is: believe in yourself, keep growing and make steps. Stay close to yourself and don't turn into someone you're not. I've been able to apply that here.

Cheerful colleagues and work environment

With my direct colleagues it clicks professionally and on a personal level. They are cheerful and pragmatic, so you can really be yourself in the team. We like to roll up our sleeves, are flexible and stress-resistant (which is quite important!). Together we tackle many different ICT infrastructure issues. No day is the same for us.

In addition to my work and studies, I have danced a lot of salsa in the past—also on an international level. I think it’s the cheerful and energetic nature of salsa dancing that I love. So much so that I even gave a Salsa workshop for all the colleagues at FMO, and it was a lot of fun!
