Your role
As a Senior Environmental and Social Officer, you are responsible for assessing the environmental, social, and human rights impacts and risks of our investments in the Energy sector. You will do this against the requirements of the IFC Performance Standards on Environmental and Social Sustainability (IFC PS) and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. This results in helping FMO clients in mobilizing the technical and financial resources needed to address environmental, social, and human rights aspects of their operations on the ground, Additionally, you will be managing the independent E&S consultants’ scope of work, output, and their monitoring.
Next to that you will:
- Maximize efficiency in the investment process for customer by managing or promoting collaboration and coordination on specific investments.
- Managing the existing portfolio and reporting adequately in our own systems.
- Negotiate, execute compliance monitoring, and modify legal documentation related to credible remedial E&S actions.
- Provide training and coaching on environmental, social, and human rights issues to FMO clients, investment staff and other E&S Officers/Associates/Analysts, and identify technical assistance opportunities.
- Providing input, upon request, to FMO’s grievance mechanism, and cooperate with external stakeholders (for example, the Dutch Government or NGOs) as necessary.
- Enhance FMO’s corporate knowledge base by analyzing and demonstrating lessons learned from FMO investments.
- Represent FMO at technical subject matter meetings, industry events, and environmental, social, or human rights fora.

Your team
The ESG + department seeks to deliver impact on the SDGs by being a driving force behind scalable private sector interventions to deliver decent jobs, reduce inequalities between and within countries and transition to a +1.5-degree world. This role will fall to the dedicated E&S Energy Team. The team consists of 7 (including this position) environmental and social professionals with different environmental and social expertise, and an E&S Manager, whom you will report to.
Our (Sr) Environmental and Social Officers (ESOs) work hand in hand with our investment staff and our clients to ensure that environmental, social, and human rights impact and risks are being considered throughout the investment process.
Your background
To execute this position successfully you must have:
- Master’s degree in an environmental, social, interdisciplinary or other relevant science.
- At least 10 years of applied knowledge and / or experience in identifying environmental, social and/or human rights risks, and developing mitigation measures in line with IFC Performance Standards.
- Experience in developing countries.
- Excellent command of English and preferably one other foreign language (e.g. French)
- The ability to work in interdisciplinary teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- The ability and willingness to travel frequently to developing countries.
- Intrinsic motivation to aim for a better world, combined with a can-do mentality.
It would be great if you have:
- Experience with Energy investments and due diligence.
- Advising private sector clients on adherence to international best practices.
- Working experience with vulnerable communities and social impact practices/tools is highly desirable.
- Engagement with Civil society and reputation risk analysis is an advantage.
