Who is our customer

Habesha is an upcoming player (#4, 8% market share) in the Ethiopian beer market and majority (60%) owned by Swinkels Family Breweries N.V. (“Bavaria”), a large and well-known Dutch brewer with a long track-record.

What is our funding objective?

The objective is to substantially increase Habesha’s sourcing of commercially available malt barley from smallholder and emergent commercial farmers in Ethiopia. A “whole value chain” approach would look at key challenges and opportunities along the upstream Habesha malt barley supply chain.

Why do we fund this investment?

The project is relevant for different reasons: FMO is funding this project to substantially increase the commercial sourcing of malt barley from smallholder farmers whilst improving food security, enhancing livelihoods of smallholder farmers and reducing reliance on imported malt barley.
